2. Allen Chapel AME Church will be featured in a historical exhibit
LINCOLN —
Allen Chapel AME Church will be featured in a first-time historical exhibit this weekend during the Lincoln Railsplitting Festival. The exhibit will be open both Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Special Events Building.
Allen Chapel, located at 910 Broadway, is one of the oldest continuously-used African-American churches in the area. The congregation was formed in 1868 and the present building was erected in 1880.
The small brick structure is the only church building in Logan County that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was named to the register in 2004, due in great part to the many services it has provided to the African-American community throughout its many years of existence.
The exhibit will explore Allen Chapel’s connections to acclaimed author Langston Hughes, literary giant William Maxwell, Dr. William Maxwell, one of the first black surgeons of World War I, and Aaron Dyer, an Underground Railroad operator.
Hughes was a member of the church during the short but very formative time he and his mother lived in Lincoln. He wrote his first poem as an eighth-grader at Central School. Since the erection of the new Central School building several years ago, Allen Chapel is the community’s last building with an actual link to the famous author and poet.
William Maxwell attended a service at the church with his father’s housekeeper, Laura Dyer, and several of his books contain characters he created after researching the Dyer family. “Billie Dyer and Other Stories” features the life of Dr. William Dyer.
Dr. Dyer, a member of Allen Chapel, made his mark as one of the first African-American military surgeons and continued his practice in Kansas City following his military service. He was the first African-American in Lincoln to join the military when World War I began. The exhibit will feature excerpts from his military diary provided by Lincoln Public Library, along with a letter written to friends in the 1950s.
The library has also generously provided free handouts for the exhibit, listing books by Langston Hughes and William Maxwell that are available locally.
Dr. Dyer’s grandfather, Aaron Dyer, worked as a driver on the Underground Railroad in Springfield in his younger years. In his old age, he moved to Lincoln to be near his family and became a member of Allen Chapel AME Church.
The exhibit will also feature photographs of the church and information about the group of community activists known as Friends of Allen Chapel, who are striving to raise funds for tuck pointing and other needed repairs to the building.
