1. LG to invest $7bn in 'Green New Business'
South Korea's LG Electronics has announced that it will invest 8 trillion won ($6.83 billion) in green projects like electric vehicle parts, LED lighting and sewage treatment industries by 2015, Reuters has reported. The country's second largest business conglomerate has clarified that it is aiming, from its new strategy titled "Green New Business", to generate 10 trillion ($8.5bn) won in revenues and create 10,000 new jobs through these investments.
2. Local pastor in the running to be bishop in AME Zion Church
Rochester's African American faith community for the past six years. But now, a local pastor has an opportunity of a lifetime to cater to an even bigger group of followers.
Reverend Kenneth James, pastor of the Memorial AME Zion Church on Clarissa Street in Rochester, was thrown a curve ball recently when he found out he was one of 15 candidates for three bishop positions, soon to be vacated by retiring bishops.
“I want to offer my gifts and abilities and what I feel like I can bring to the leadership of our denomination,” said James.
James says more than 600 delegates -- made up of AME Zion clergy and lay people from around the world – will cast their ballots for the new bishops. James is already starting to mentally prepare.
“I started feeling nervous on Thursday, because Thursday was the kick-off, and it just became clear to me that I was really beginning a transition in my life,” explained James.
“This is a huge more, not only for him personally, but for the ANE Zion Church as a whole,” said parishioner Justin Walker.
Walker has attended James' church for five years, and plays the drums during the Sunday service. He's excited for James, but says it'll be a tremendous loss for the church. Emotions among the other parishioners are mixed.
“A group of people don't want him to leave, a group of people know that it's his destiny for him to be all that god wants him to be, and some of them don't care because where he goes they're going,” said Walker.
“It's a change for all of us, but change is necessary in life,” said James.
James won't find out if he gets the bishop job until July. He says it wouldn't be a difficult move personally because he's not married and his kids are grown up. He says he could end up anywhere from Louisiana to California to Africa. If he does get the bishop job, the AME Zion bishop who oversees New York would select a replacement at the Rochester church.
3. AME operating losses rise
African Mining & Exploration posts an operating loss of £638,846 for the six months to the end of June - up from £276,267 a year ago.
Pre-tax losses rose to £629,400 - up from £276,267 last time.
The company had cash and cash equivalents of £4.4m compared with £79,719 a year ago.
The company said West Africa had experienced abnormally high rainfall this year which had hampered some of the fieldwork, as had the lack of availability of an RAB drilling rig.
But AME said the planned work programme on compiling data to a centralised database has continued and the structural analysis, mapping and sampling of its Malian tenements were well under way.
It said the study of geomorphology will be included with structural mapping to better gain an understanding of potential gold sources in assessing the viability of all new permits to ensure we retain only those that provide genuine opportunity.
AME said its team had also started a reconnaissance of other permits areas in the region where it could secure rights through acquisition or joint ventures should the company believe they harbour good opportunity.
