Tiger Airways

1.  Virgin Blue executive tipped for Tiger boss in Australia

TIGER Airways is believed to have appointed a former Virgin Blue executive as its new Australian boss.

While the airline has yet to make an announcement and did not respond to questions over the weekend, speculation has centred on whether former Virgin chief operating officer Andrew David will take the helm of the troubled airline.

Industry sources said Mr David would be a logical choice because of his strong operational background across a wide variety of airline functions. His responsibilities included flight operations, ground services, engineering and safety systems.

The new boss will replace chief executive Tony Davis, who is leaving Tiger after overseeing its return to service following its grounding by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for safety reasons.

The appointment of Mr David would be in keeping with indications from the Singaporean-owned carrier that it wants somebody with local industry experience to take the reins at its Australian operations.

A former Air New Zealand executive, Mr David replaced Virgin co-founder Rob Sherrard in the key operational role and spent more than five years at Australia's second-biggest carrier. He was briefly touted as a contender to replace Brett Godfrey in the top job at Virgin.

Tiger is slowly reopening routes after its grounding over July and last week restarted operations to Perth. This brought it to the limit of nine return services a week CASA had imposed on it until the end of last month.

The grounding proved a boon to the low-cost carrier's competitors, with Virgin Australia revealing last week that domestic passenger numbers jumped by 6 per cent in July and its revenue load factor was 3.8 percentage points higher than the previous year at 82.5 per cent.

Restructuring at the airline saw international passenger numbers slump 20.9 per cent on the previous year due to its withdrawal from the New Zealand domestic market.
